William S. Harris, PhD

Dr. Harris is an internationally recognized expert on omega-3 fatty acids and how they can benefit patients with heart disease. He has been the recipient of five NIH grants for studies on the effects of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) on human health. He has over 80 publications relating to omega-3 fatty acids in medical literature and was co-author of the America Heart Association's scientific statement, "Fish Consumption, Fish Oil, Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Cardiovascular Disease" published in 2002 in the journal Circulation.

Dr. Harris currently serves as the Director of the Cardiovascular Health Research Center at Sanford Research/USD in Sioux Falls, SD, and is a Research Professor of Medicine at the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota. In 2009, Dr. Harris founded OmegaQuant Analytics, a subsidiary of Omega Biostatus, LLC, of which he is the President and CEO.

In 2004, Dr. Harris and his colleague Dr. Clemens von Schacky, a cardiology researcher in Munich, Germany, proposed that the Omega-3 Index be considered a new risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Dr. von Schacky operates OmegaMetrix, GmbH, a laboratory that offers the same HS-Omega-3 Index test in the European Union that OmegaQuant Analytics offers in North America.
